South African Bakithi Kumalo’s work on the electric bass has garnered him a stellar reputation as a musician. In addition to recording and touring with Paul Simon on the album Graceland, Kumalo has recorded and/or toured with Hugh Masekela, Grover Washington, Jr., Harry Belafonte, Miriam Makeba, Josh Groban, Chris Botti, and others.

“Things are not always what they appear to be,” says Cuban American photographer Abelardo Morell. Shadow of a House presents a rare look into the life of one of America’s renowned photographers, examining one man’s personal struggle with loss, exile, and self determination. Join us for a screening of the film, followed by a conversation between the photographer and Philadelphia filmmaker Allie Humenuk. This program is funded by the Irma and Herbert Barness Endowment Lecturer Fund.

What factors converged to produce these cultural capitals? “The city” and “nature” were consistent subjects in late nineteenth and early twentieth century art, when artists grappled with a rapidly industrializing world. This course examines both themes. Lectures cover the following topics:

• The R/realism of Painting Nature: Courbet, Millet, Manet, and Eakins
• Symbolic Landscapes: Seurat, van Gogh, Gauguin, and Cézanne
• The Gritty City: Henri, Sloan, Shinn, and Bellows
• Precisely Urban: Stella, Demuth, Hopper, and Davis

Teachers, take this course on Saturdays and receive ACT 48 credit. This course is eligible for 4 Pennsylvania or New Jersey teacher professional-development hours.

Auguste Rodin’s obsession with infusing all forms of art with both motion and emotion had far-reaching effects on drawings and paintings as well as sculpture by American artists including John Singer Sargent, Maurice Sterne, Charles Demuth, and Alexander Calder, among many others. In this seminar, Roberta K. Tarbell will discuss the process of organizing an exhibition and writing a substantial catalogue on Rodin’s influence on American art as part of a team of six American and French curators. Study of the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s extensive collection of Rodin drawings and prints has provided the impetus for a collaborative project of curators and conservators, developing new insight into the challenging problems of authenticity of drawings attributed to Rodin himself in search of a fuller and more accurate appreciation of his legacy.

Artist James Castle made thousands of handmade books, often using found materials such as matchbook covers, cigarette packs, and cereal boxes. Learn to make books with artists from the Philadelphia Center for the Book. Come with your own found materials (packaging of all kinds, leaflets, rubber stamps, etc.) to create your own Castle-inspired books. Participants will also have an opportunity to visit the exhibition James Castle: A Retrospective.

Enrollment limited to 20 participants. Four half-day workshops are offered. Please register for one only.
